Awfully Good Film Gets Second Life - Bestworstmovie.com & Cowboy and John Unite Troll 2 Fans
New York, NY (September 6 2006) - The film has spurred fan sites, music videos, invitation-only dress-up dinner parties, audience participation screenings, drinking games, remixed songs, and even dance moves - but mention the title and most people will have never head of it. Troll 2, a film that critics have placed in the so bad it's good genre, was released over 16 years ago with little success. Fast forward to 2004 when MGM re-released it on DVD and today the movie is becoming known as the "best worst movie" with fans from around the world buzzing about its awfulness.
On September 14, the day that bestworstmovie.com launches, the comedy duo, the Cowboy and John (Curtis Gwinn and John Gemberling), will host a Troll 2 screening and cast Q&A at the Upright Citizen's Brigade theater (UCB) in New York City.
"I didn't realize how big the movie had become until I received an email, earlier this year, from a fan in Zimbabwe. He told me he had seen the movie over 100 times and even hosts his own Troll 2 parties," said George Hardy, lead actor (Michael Waits) in Troll 2 and co-founder of bestworstmovie.com. "Over the last few years the fans have made it there goal to spread the Troll 2 infection and have Troll 2 recognized as the best worst movie. The film has taken on a whole new life."
Troll 2, a low budget, Italian B-horror film originally released in 1990, is currently ranked on Internet Movie Database (IMDb) as the #1 worst movie of all time.
"Troll 2 is not just another bad film. It's an infectious disease providing an absurd form of contagious entertainment," said Michael Stephenson, lead actor (Joshua Waits) in Troll 2. "Troll 2's popularity is spreading like a virus. College kids are passing around worn VHS copies and going through great effort to organize Troll 2 parties. The only requirement for admittance is to bring something green to eat and throw popcorn and bologna sandwiches at the screen during appropriate scenes. It's becoming our generations Rocky Horror Picture Show."
The movie follows young Joshua Waits and his family on their family trip. Joshua discovers that the trip is haunted by vile man-eating monsters. His attempt to save his beloved family is assisted by his deceased grandfather.
"I wanted to find a way to capture this Troll 2 phenomenon," said Mr. Stephenson. "We decided to launch a web site that could serve as a central location for Troll 2 fans throughout the world to commune, post homemade videos and songs and capture the fanfare that is making this movie so popular."
Bestworstmovie.com includes an online community where fans can become official Nilbog Goblins in Disguise, giving them access to such areas as the Nil-Blog, a blog that allows fans to interact with original cast and crew as well as share thoughts and comments relating to Troll 2. Goblin Goodies offers guests everything from desktop artwork and t-shirts to exclusive behind-the-scenes pictures and the original Troll 2 script. The website will spread the Troll 2 infection by spotlighting fans that post their own Troll 2 Viruses including songs, movies, posters and more. Prizes such as cash and Troll 2 memorabilia will be awarded to the #1 fan as well as recognition in the Troll 2 documentary - Best Worst Movie.
The Upright Citizen's Brigade Theater in New York City will screen the movie on September 14, 2006 at 9:30 pm and will host a Q&A afterwards with the actors from the film including Michael Stephenson (Joshua Waits), George Hardy (Mr. Waits) and Darren Ewing (Arnold).
"We happened upon Troll 2 a number of years ago and we immediately fell in love with it - we've been showing it to as many people as we can ever since," said Curtis Gwinn, UCB performer and comedian for New York's comedy duo, Cowboy and John. "Hundreds of excited fans have already reserved tickets and will be flying or driving across state lines for this special event."
